One of our guiding Bible passages comes from the prophet Jeremiah, who told the Israelites to “seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7).
We believe it isn’t an accident that God has put our church and each of us where we are and that we’re here as His ambassadors to show His love to our neighbors through:
Acts of faithful care, love and kindness in our daily lives.
Groups of people coming together around a common passion or idea.
Partnering with other organizations in the community in responding to an unmet need.
If you share our passion, we’d love to talk to you about how we might make a difference together!
Our outreach and mission ministry consists of two types of work: ongoing and occasional projects. Here’s a small taste of some of both:
School Backpack Program – Several years ago, we partnered with Northeast Iowa Food Bank and their program that provides a free backpack full of food for the weekend for qualifying students. The program has been a huge success. Our volunteers meet on Fridays to distribute the backpacks to elementary students. We also started a Birthday Bag program where students, who elect to do so, will receive a bag with cake mix, candles, frosting, plates and napkins on their birthday, so that they can celebrate with their family.
Monthly Food Bank Collection – On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate communion and take the opportunity to give thanks to Our Lord for feeding us by helping feed others. Each member is asked to bring a can or two of food for the local Delaware County Food Bank.
Second Helpings – Second Helpings is a free local meal served each Monday evening. 3 or 4 times each year, we provide part of the meal and the hands to serve it. We also donate our offerings from the Christmas Eve service to the Second Helpings ministry.
Care and Visitation– We have a dedicated group of people who enjoy visiting our homebound or nursing home members on a monthly basis and also send greeting cards to our church family.
This year, our theme for worship is “Serve Christ”. To go along with this year’s theme, our worship committee has encouraged our congregation to serve Christ in many ways. We incorporated the idea of serving Christ at home, in our church, our community, our nation, and our world through several projects. An example of one such project is for serving Christ in our nation, we have assembled Gift of the Heart kits for the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program. Through the season of Lent, we donated items to make up Hygiene kits, assembled the kits, and then mailed them so that they may be used for those in need.
Fundraising Projects – Each year, we take on a special fundraising event for a local or global mission. In past years, we have raised funds for earthquake relief in Haiti, mosquito nets in Africa, Living Water International and the work of the Heifer Project.
Funeral Luncheons – We have a dedicated group of ladies who provide a wonderful lunch after funerals held at the church. They are gracious hosts and help show our love to families in their times of need.
